What is real?
Living in a world where we are continually saturated by media arts messages (special effects, manipulations, enhancements, exaggerations, and gimmicky edits), it is essential that we understand the codes and conventions inherent in the reading and production of emergent media artworks. Given that media arts technology is a constant in our world, it is necessary that we become knowledgeable about its obvious, implied, and practical uses. This raises the question, “How do we categorically and legally separate original artistic endeavour from technologically enhanced or reinterpreted works of art?”
These examples are meant to promote discussion of how one can interpret reality in media arts.
Assignment 1.1a - What is Real? – Deconstructing Media Arts
There are many examples of media that has been repurposed to resell to an audience, weather it be a film, television show, music, art, product, or advertisement.
In the chart below you will see how an original piece of media was manipulated to create a new media item for commercial use. I have completed the first in each category for you. You are to find two examples on your own of original film or TV, music or work of art, and advertising or product that has been manipulated or copied to create a new media product.
Search the internet to find the examples that you are to supply. Some hints on searches should include: similarity lawsuits, movie rip offs, etc.
Submit your work on the blog of your website with the title ASSIGNMENT 1.1 - WHAT IS REAL? – DECONSTRUCTING MEDIA ARTS.
